Relaunching Cferthorney.com I have finally gotten around to relaunching my personal website, here on https://www.cferthorney.com. I have also migrated my previous personal blog posts from my old personal website, now business site https://www.davidthorne.net. The old articles can be found at https://www.cferthorney.com/archive, and new blog posts such as this one are https://www.cferthorney.com/posts.
I am not going to promise to blog often. I keep saying I will, and it never happens. Blog articles are likely to focus on more personal aspects and non-business related tech posts.

The update of davidthorne.net has been delayed. I’ve finally commissioned a designer, and we’re going to be working on the new design by January (The delay is mine, I was in hospital over late October and half of November). The content reorganisation is mapped out (As soon as I work out a good way to share it I will, I intend to open source as much of the process I use as possible), the code I want to write for displaying my CV [github.

Today (27 Sept 2016) I took and passed the Acquia Drupal 8 certification. At DrupalCon, there is usually the option for a single retake exams in the event of failure. Thankfully I didn’t need that, but it was a nice safety blanket to have. Surprisingly I did best in terms of result by section in front end (Which is usually my weakest subject) Which was a really pleasant surprise!

So in March 2014 Acquia (The company run by Dries Buytaert [buytaert.net], the project founder of Drupal) launched it’s certification program [acquia.com]. Whilst I am not necessarily an advocate of having a certification for every PHP framework or CMS that exists, but I do feel that Drupal did need something.
A little History As is the case with a lot of PHP frameworks or open source projects, you find a large variety of abilities irrespective of experience level as a PHP developer.

Links have been stripped from this article due to age and inaccessibility. Well it has finally happened, I have upgraded my site to Drupal 7. I am finally shot of Drupal 6 (on this site at least - my company [contemporaryfusion.co.uk] one is a work in progress) My Omega based theme discussed in my earlier blog [davidthorne.net] is well underway, but I got fed up of importing in blog articles via the feeds module I have published the site temporarily with the Bartik default theme, so I can concentrate in my “free time” on building the Contemporary Fusion website.

This page is heavily out of date due to both Github and Bitbucket changing their pricing structure. It still offers free private and public repositories as of June 2017. I now use Gitlab for private repo’s. So I have decided to trial Bitbucket [bitbucket.org] for my private source code repositories as it provides upto 5 users with unlimited public and private repos. For now at least I will be leaving my public repo’s on github [github.

London I only made Dries' keynote). This time it was by Anke Domscheit-Berg, entitled “Digital Democracy - How Technology helps Governments and Citizens to Open Up Politics and Public Administration” It was a very interesting keynote on the importance of open data, and allowing people access to non-sensitive data.

So far the sessions have been good. Dries' keynote [drupal.org] was different, it was an interview done by Josh Koenig (JoshK [drupal.org]) on D.O [drupal.org]. The questions were mostly regarding Drupal 8, Acquia, and (Most importantly!) how Dries keeps his hair spiky! After the Keynote, I went a long to the Caching with no fear [drupal.

And David is determined to write a blog everyday!
DrupalCon is finally here! Not that I have been waiting for a long time or anything! As I write this I have just popped up to my room to grab my AC adapter, and my conference pass so people know I am a Drupaler. OK so I have proven decidedly rubbish as blogging in this 12412 [12412.org] lark but having said that on the front page of 12412 they have got May’s project written up in June and nothing for July, so I don’t feel too too bad (But still very guilty) I have managed to calm down a bit by looking at what I have at least tried to learn this year:

This is an old article with links stripped out due to their new site being not safe for work OK so there is an online movement called 12412 [12412.org], encouraging people to learn 12 new technologies over the course of 2012. This really appeals to my inner geek, as I love learning new technologies, but I usually go about it in a half baked way, and loose track quickly. So I am determined to do something along the lines of 12412 and spend some time each month learning new technologies.

So does a new year mean I have to change? And does it mean I have to make resolutions? No but change still needs to come and here is why…
Obviously I will get older (thankfully not the big 30 this year but will do in 2013), supposedly wiser, and probably not get richer (Especially as I am having to slow down the amount of work I do due to health issues with my CF) but all these things are a change.

Firstly yes this is a blog entry by me, I know you are all shocked and I apologise for being away so long. Hopefully including upgrades to Drupal 7, and a new design - (With the aim of having a fully responsive design to iPhone resolutions, as well as several popular android phones) I am hoping to launch that sometime between now (Early Nov ‘11) and New Year (Jan ‘12)

Some links have been stripped from this article due to age and inaccessibility. If like me you need to have RPM/.deb based PHP instead of a self compiled option (For example you are using something such as Plesk which wants RPM/.deb based PHP) and you don’t want to play the rpm -Uvh --justdb (or dpkg equivalent) game I discovered today that you can compile just various modules of PHP using a combination of the phpize (found in the php-devel RPM or php5-dev deb package)
